Plaster Cast: Pajant Berenice, Drawing Model, Art Material, Interior Large Object

The plaster cast Pajanto was used as a drawing subject in the 2018 entrance examination for the Department of Crafts at Tokyo University of the Arts, and is frequently drawn in preparatory schools.

While the difficulty is high due to the smooth modeling characteristic of women, the hairstyle, and the drapery of the clothing, this piece is highly recommended for exam preparation as you can observe and sketch it thoroughly at home without being constrained by the limited time of a preparatory school.

The original sculpture from which the plaster cast is derived is housed in the Louvre Museum in France. The name Pajanto is used only in Japan; in the Louvre's catalog, it is called Berenice. A nearly identical sculpture's head is also housed in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, where it is also labeled Berenice. Berenice is a common female name found in the ancient Mediterranean, particularly referring to queens and consorts of the ancient Egyptian Ptolemaic dynasty. The hairstyle, intricately braided and hanging down on both sides, is characteristic and is considered iconography representing North African Libyans.
