Vintage Native American Wabanaki Ash Splint Basket Curly Porcupine Weave 10"

Up for sale is a beautiful, highly collectible piece of Northeast Native American material art. This vintage Wabanaki (attributed Penobscot) fancy basket is masterfully handwoven from traditional brown ash splints. It features a beautifully carved, movable bentwood swing handle attached with metal rivets.  The standout feature of this basket is the exceptional porcupine curl (or snail curl) weaving technique layered across the exterior. This painstaking method involves twisting individual wood splints to create a stunning, multi-dimensional geometric texture. The structure remains sturdy and tight. The delicate curls are exceptionally well-preserved across the body, with only the minimal, minor age-related wear expected of authentic mid-century wood splint basketry.
