Matazo Kayama (1927-2004)
An artist who pioneered new frontiers in Japanese painting.
He consistently pursued ambitious and innovative creative activities, with his diverse expressions including animal series, his dedication to nude paintings, and his inclination towards ink wash painting, all representing a challenge to the endless possibilities of expression rooted in Japanese painting. His simple compositions of birds, flowers, landscapes, and nudes, characterized by bold stylization and luxurious colors, have been praised as the Modern Rinpa. His work extended beyond painting to include ceramic decoration, murals, ceiling paintings, and various decorative designs. He expressed the traditional aesthetic beauty of Japanese painting with a contemporary sensibility, exerting a significant influence on modern Japanese art.
