Danish Mid-Century / Wooden Plate (Wenge) Rare Item Vintage

This is a wooden plate purchased in Denmark about 20 years ago. It is an original, large plate measuring 28cm, designed during the peak of Danish Mid-Century Modern design in the 1950s and 1960s, featuring designers like Wegner, Juhl, and Jacobsen.

While many unsigned teak and rosewood pieces, including those by Kay Bojesen, are commonly found, this one is extremely rare as it is made from Wenge wood. I only encountered it once during my stay. It is not made of veneer but is carved from solid wood, with a superb form that rivals Bojesen's work.

It can be used as is, but it appears it was often used with ceramic plates placed on top.

Due to moving, I am selling off Danish Mid-Century Modern crafts, antiques, and modern art.

#Wenge is a high-grade hardwood native to Africa, belonging to the legume family. It is characterized by its distinctive dark brown color with fine stripes and its extremely dense and heavy nature. It is durable and insect-resistant, used in high-end furniture, flooring, and musical instruments as a substitute for ironwood. However, it is now an endangered species, making it increasingly rare.
