Vintage Spanish Matador Bull Shoe Horn Damascene Style Toledo Spain Souvenir
Unknown
Vintage Spanish Matador & Bull Shoehorn Small vintage metal shoehorn with detailed central vignette depicts a matador confronting a bull beneath a red cape, accented in silver, black and red against a textured gold-tone ground. The handle is decorated with black and gold-tone scrolling geometric ornament in the style associated with traditional Toledo Spanish damascene work. Silver-tone accents and red and black details highlight the central bullfighting scene. The working end of the shoehorn has five rounded metal sections that fan outward to create the heel portion. The handle curves upward slightly and has a small hole at the end for hanging. Measures approximately 4 1/4 inches long. Believed to be a mid-20th-century Spanish souvenir piece, approximately 1950s–1970s. The piece is unmarked, so the exact maker and place of manufacture are unknown. It is described as damascene style rather than attributed as genuine Toledo damascene work. Condition: Good vintage condition with expected age-related surface wear, patina, discoloration and light scratching. The decorative design and colorful bullfighting scene remain quite attractive. No maker or country mark found. Please enlarge and review photographs as they are an important part of the condition description.
